Definition: The average age at which normal (average) individuals achieve a particular score.

Examples/Functions


  • If you take all 25 years olds and give them an IQ test the average would be the mental age of 25.
  • A person who is 16 but takes an intelligence test and scores the same as the average 25 year old would have a mental age of 25.
  • A child who is 6 but scores the same as an average 13 year old would have a mental age of 13.
  • So, a person whose chronological age is 10 with an IQ of 150 has the mental age of 15.
  • A person whose chronological age is 10 with an IQ of 50 has the mental age of 5.
  • A person whose chronological age is 10 with an IQ of 100 has the mental age of 10.
