The Curious Case of Phineas Gage
In September 1848, a 25-year-old American railroad worker named Phineas Gage sustained a horrible head injury when a charge of blasting powder drove an iron rod into his face, up through the front of his brain, and out through the top of his head. Amazingly, he recovered from this injury and lived another 12 years-but as a psychologically changed man. Those who knew him remarked that Gage, once a dependable and likable crew boss, had
become an irresponsible and rowdy ruffian. In essence, he was no longer himself. We cannot help but wonder: Had the site of Gage's injury-the front of his brain-been the home of his "old self?"
