arise from conflicts in the unconscious mind. The definition of psychology should be expanded to include the unconscious. Even though a lot of his theories have been disproven, Sigmund Freud is widely considered the father of modern psychiatry. Sigmund Freud's view of consciousness is opposite of William
' "stream of consciousness." Freud believed that our consciousness is like the tip of an iceberg; most of it is beneath the surface, lurking out of sight.
Famous Studies by Freud
Many of Freud's ideas, revolutionary at the time he proposed them, have been
to criticism and many of them are not widely accepted in psychological circles today. Most of his ideas revolve around the study of the unconscious mind, which is propelled by such ideas that a child unconsciously wants to have sex with their parent of the opposite sex, and to eliminate the parent of the same sex. This could possibly be used to explain a child's excitement in breast feeding. However, once that child learns of the taboo of this complex, know as
, they accept that this is unattainable. Freud theorized that desires such as these are held deep within the unconscious mind and motivate our day to day living without specifically thinking about these things. Neo-freudians are inspired by Freud's ideas but place less emphasis on his ideas of sex and of the effect of one's childhood on an individual. Some of his most famous theories include the id, superego, and ego, and his psychosexual stages. The mind works to satisfy needs, desires, and wants. The superego is basically our definitions of rights and wrongs that establish for ourselves. The ego deals with reality; it tries to get our basic needs with a socially acceptable and real manner.
According to Freud the
mind is like an iceberg.
Our unconscious mind is a dark, dark place; we store unwanted feelings/thoughts there; It is something we don't want to know about or be aware of.
Freud's dream theory:
Freud believed dreams served to guard sleep, to press cognitive needs, and to reflect important events or fantasies in a dreamers mental world. This the theory ties into Dream Interpretation Therapy. He also believed that it broke into the manifest and latent content.
Is the story line of a dream, and the obvious connection to our lives.
