Definition: The middle layer of the brain, involved in emotion and memory. The limbic system includes the hippocampus, amygdala, and the hypothalamus.

Quite Simply......

  • The limbic system controls the "fight-or-flight" response. This would be controlling behaviors like attack, defense, and retreat.
  • Reticular formation forms many emotional reactions such as anger and fear.
  • The part of the brain that that hold our emotion and memories is our Cerebral Cortex.

Examples/Functions

  • Learning and memory: Hippocampus
  • Hunger and eating: Hypothalamus
  • Evidence of the Limbic system's connections to emotion have been tested in a process of either cutting or stimulating parts of it to produce responses in emotion.
