Born in 1934, George Sperling is an American cognitive psychologist. He is a distinguished psychologist in Cognitive Science and Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of California. In his studies, Sperling documented the existence of iconic memory (sensory memory).

In 1960, Sperling conducted his sensory memory experiment where used a brief image of letters, and asked volunteers to report as many letters as they could remember. This was used to test the capacity and the duration of sensory memory. He discovered sensory memory holds 12-16 items at a time.
